Duties
• To provide a comprehensive and effective high quality Ultrasound (Sonographer-led) service, taking a lead role in positively encouraging and maintaining the highest professional and technical standards in all staff using personal example and constructive supervision. To ensure that all Ultrasound referrals are evaluate and prioritise according to company clinical protocol and clinical information.
• To seek clinical clarity where Ultrasound requests are equivocal.
• Manage the Ultrasound referral workload in terms of both individual list management as well as the wider service requirements.
• To display a high level of dexterity within the realms of the ultrasound clinical protocol.
• Maintain a high level of accuracy whilst performing each specialised ultrasound examinations.
• To perform the technical aspects of Ultrasound scanning, physically adapting technique where patient presentation dictates.
• To analyse the clinical information and select the most appropriate scanning protocol and technique for the referrals.
• To perform trans-abdominal, trans-vaginal, pelvic, small parts and vascular ultrasound scanning.
• When exposed to bodily fluids, contamination should be avoided in line with Health and Safety and disposed of appropriately. This matter should be dealt with efficiently and discreetly. Ensuring the patient and relatives emotional distress is kept to a minimum.
• To ensure optimum sterility is maintained throughout invasive ultrasound examinations.
• To act as a patient advocate in Ultrasound scanning issues.
• To exercise the highest standard of patient care and actively improve the patient experience.
• To ensure the appropriate consent has been acquired depending on clinical protocol.
• Assess the individual communication needs of patients and ensure advocacy is arranged.
• To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients prior to, during and after an examination.
• Examine, diagnose and ultimately assist in the treatment plan of the patient.
• To undertake and report examinations and make referral to the appropriate Specialists and Clinics when required, giving highly specialised advice with regards to patient management plan. To suggest where appropriate additional imaging/further management is required. To convey such findings to the verifying Radiologist
• Liaise with the radiologist where clarification is required for most clinically appropriate imaging.
• Ensure that urgent findings are communicated with clinicians accordingly.
Requirements:
• Must hold a degree or diploma in Diagnostic Radiography
• Posses a degree in Post Graduate Ultrasound.
• Validated with the Irish Institute of Radiographers.
• Excellent communication skills
• Ideally have 3 years satisfactory, post graduate experience.
